Why I Write

Never thought I would be publishing anything on medium for a few reasons:

A. I have not written anything formally since high school.

B. My writing in high school was awful.

C. I hate writing.

But, here we are.

To keep it brief, this will be my outlet to discuss my thoughts on various public issues because (hopefully), the few people that stumble upon my writings will not pass imminent judgment on my opinions and, thereby, form judgment on my character and person.

Nowadays, if you have a “wrong” opinion on a specific issue that goes against the grain of the majority, you are asking to be crucified. This should not be the case. I notice that far too many people, including myself, are too scared to voice their opinions for fear of persecution. Everyone has a unique upbringing that crafts their unique values and that is what drives an individual to feel a certain way. It is through understanding this concept, first, that people are able to have constructive conversations and allow for an open dialogue to take place.

These days, conversations go a lot like this.

Person 1: “Hey, did you see that new groundbreaking story?”

Person 2: “Yea, that’s awful what happened. I hope they punish them.”

Person 1: “What? How could you think that? Someone had to step up and do it. If you think what they did was wrong, I cannot stand to be associated with you.”

Person 2: “Excuse me? You are out of your mind. Stop talking, thanks.”

I see this type of discourse more often than I would like and it ruins our ability to navigate civil and productive discussion. It is important that we step away from our opinions and take a minute to understand why the opposing side feels a certain way. Without this understanding, we will never foster a proper exchange of ideas.

This is the purpose of my blog. This is why I write.

Thank you.
